NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams

I got NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams yesterday, its good. The movies and flight levels are GREAT, the kid levels are blah, and the in-game cimemas look bad.

You can tell they rushed the game, they should not worry so much about x-mas. I like the game, but it could have been a lot better. You can't skip the cinemas, the story is ok, but the cinemas look Dreamcast quality, not Wii. The rest of the game is not like that, the rest of the game rocks.

The 1st boss NiGHTS. Its like the old game too where if you die past the 1st loop of a level or a boss, you start from the beginning. Thats waht can make it hard, but once you know what to do it gets easy.

There are a few control setups. It plays interesting with the Wiimote where you just point at the screen, it’s a tad harder to do the loops though. Then I tried the classic controller, works great, like classic NiGHTS. I think the Wiimote + Nunchuck works the best, the analog is a tad smoother overall.

Overall the game is good, would have been great if it was all flight levels and the in-game cinemas didn’t look so bad (ie. DC quality). Ya, these may seem like more than minor gripes, but the main levels are so much fun (like the original), most people won't care.

Thats my intial impressions, lets take it to the boards for more discussion.

Beggers can be losers........

Here's an incident that almost ended my retail gaming career before it even got started. This took place shortly after I was hired for the store, I think about my third shift in. I had several things going on at once, which is the usual when you're the only person working the store. I'm waiting on a guy in line buying a lot of new release movies, so spending that much money will get you most of my attention. Behind him is a store regular wanting to sell a PS2 set.

As I'm ringing up the movie guy, a colorful character walks in and starts talking to the ps2 lady. They talked like they knew each other and I didn't think much of it. Until I started to actually look at the guy - he's dressed in street gear, which isn't too unusual, but he's got his jaw wired shut or something, and he's holding some kind of drink in his hand. He starts talking, and I see a Flavor Flav style metal grill in his teeth, and after a few words I figure out what kind of drink he's carrying - beer. I don't catch the whole converstation, but the ps2 lady points next door, and he leaves.

She walks up and I start to hook up her set to verify it works. She explains that he was soliciting her for some bus money, and she told him to try next door. She was creeped out by him, and said he's drunk and I should lock the front door. Not a bad idea, so I start to do that, when the store owner comes in - which takes some pressure off of me. We mention the colorful character, and speak of the devil, he strolls back in and starts yelling at everyone - "why'd you shend me necht door - they didn't give me no dolla either! Ya coulda just said no....." I thought he was going to punch the woman, the way he was looking at her. He then curses off everyone in the store, and the owner gets into it with him. It took a fake phone call to the cops to finally get him to leave.

I ask the owner if this is what I have to expect all the time. He said no, and thankfully Flavor hasn't returned to the store, probably nursing that jaw back to health, which I can pretty much guess someone caused with a large fist to his face. Makes me appreciate the geeks who come in and talk you to death that much more: at least they are non-threatening.

Puzzle Quest

I got Puzzle quest on Wii, the basic game rocks. I missed the DS version and I tried the PC Demo and loved it. But there is an issue, the Wii conversion wasn’t near the quality of the awesome like PC Demo or XBLA versions (same as PC).

It’s the same as the PS2 one with tiny text and much smaller board. Its has cool pointing controls, but the small size, makes pointing harder. It’s a great game...sadly the Wii version isn't as good as the other versions. I am very disapointed in the very lazy port of this great game. All the content is there, but these issues do take away from the game. Sadly, this made me get another version.

So I want out and got the DS version, wow the game rocks. It is so hard to put down. The graphics are better in the PC and XBLA versions, but this version has a nice size board, good music and stylus controls, which rock. Great game!

It is going to get harder to find though for DS (It's been out since March.) I found it at a Gamestop (the 3rd one I tried) for $20 and that was the last copy. Target now has it for $15 while supplies last.

Its a very addictive game with cool RPG elements that had a very D&D feel mixed with great strategy. So I recommend you get a copy soon! You won't want to stop playing!

Sony Sponsored Mario Galaxy Review: “The Worst Two-Player Experience”

I was reading Gamefaq and I came across a thread about this SONY Sponsored Super Mario Galaxy review. This is so funny, you won't believe this, read the comments too. Click on the review too and read it, he too a screen shot just incase they took it down. Just when you think companies go too far...

He says how the new Ratchet game looks better, ya, but fails to tell you about the slower framerate and massive screen tearing, and overall way lower scores. That is just one of his comments.

If you played Mario you can see the game is leaps and 360 degree plannet jumps over most games today. Go to look at the rest of his comments, its really funny.

I'm in no way a 360 or PS3 hater, but this such BS on the reviewer and SONY's part.

WOW, just, WOW!

Lots of new games

I got Super Mario Galaxy and it is great. It is one of the most fun games I have played in years. It looks, plays, sounds great.

There are so many game coming out this and next week, and thats just the Wii.

I got Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. I am really liking the game, the game looks way better than the review made me think, there is normal mapping (shininess, on some enemies and bosses, looks nice). Its 30 frames not 60, so it feels a tad slow. But the game is really fun, and the Wesker missions are cool, a lot of new background info. It is a very enjoyable game, I want to play it with the zapper, that’s next week.

I got CONTRA 4 and it is F-ing awesome. Really hard though. I beat it on easy..barly. Easy is only 7 of 9 levels though. On Normal so far, I can get to the second boss. I unlocked Contra NES already, working on Super C, good stuff!

Next week is the Wii Zapper with Links Crossbow Training, Ghost Squad (Zapper time, for RE:UC too) and Geometry Wars. Have fun!

Dreamcast Kid

This episode you get to meet one of my favorite customers, the Dreamcast kid. Let me see if I can adequately put to words what this youngster is about:

To start, he's about 9-10 years old. To understand his personality, you need to feed a child that age a large amount of crack, then give him a six pack of Red Bull, a giant size Hershey bar, a 2-liter of Coke, and a bottle of maple syrup to wash it all down with. Yes, he's that hyper.

There are two people browsing the store, and he opens the door and bolts in, cutting through the couple like a linebacker and saying "scuse me" after getting 5 steps past them. He's now at the back wall, literally bouncing up and down looking through the retrogaming racks. He then runs up to the counter and starts yelling at me "do you have any Sega Dreamcasts in?" No, I tell him. "Do you have any Sega Dreamcast VMUs?" No, I tell him, to which he then comes around the counter and points at a pile of memory cards I have waiting to be put out. "There's one! There's one!" Actually it's a N-64 rumble pack, but he swears it's a VMU. "Do you have any Sega Dreamcast power packs? I need one." No, I tell him, only a handful of Dreamcast games back on the wall.

Then he does a few more laps around the store...and by now his dad comes in. His dad actualy buys something, but I can't remember what it was, because for the whole rest of the time the kid just rapid-fires questions at me, one right after another. "Is that a Plasma TV?""When's Halo 3 coming out?""Do you have any Wii's?""What's your favorite Sega Dreamcast game?" (he always says SEGA Dreamcast.) "Can you order any Sega Dreamcast power cords?" I felt like I was on a quiz show - he wouldn't even give me time to answer any of the questions......I fear for my life the day when I actually HAVE some Dreamcast items and the kid really gets excited!

One day Hunter pulled out his camera phone and tried to get a picture of him. The results? Each shot was too blurry.

Kirby

Kirby showed up in the store one day!!!! Really!!Well, actually this girl (stop right there, I know what you're thinking: What's a girl doing in a game store? Well, most of the time it's a mom buying a game for her kids, or a female buying something for her boyfriend. I only met one girl under 45 who said she plays games for herself, and promptly asked her to marry me, bought a game on credit, and her name was Kirby. Her NAME WAS KIRBY! I told her that her name was Kirby (which I'm sure she knew since people called her that all her life), and explained that was also a video game character, which she said she knew. Not much of a point to that story, but Kirby visiting the store made my afternoon.....

Super Mario Galaxy

I played Super Mario Galaxy yesterday, it was Awesome. I played it at the Gamestop demo kiosk. I am impressed the game is great, I beat the first boss, played for like 20 mins. I didn't want to play too much, I can’t wait to get into the game.

At first it felt a tad weird running upside down, the feeling was just so different, but I got used to it. Jumping feels a tad floaty, but that probably because of the physics engine and in game gravity. It really feels like a unique experience. The game does feel like Mario 64 2, so much more than Sunshine.

At Gamestop, the game was in widescreen but why don’t they have progressive scan on, it makes no sense. The game looks great, but the way Gamestop had it, it was overly jaggy and blurry. You can see the quality and outstanding texture and lighting. I guess I will have to wait to get it home to see it in its visual glory. I am not worried because I played Metroid Prime 3 there too before It came out and it was the same situation. When I brought it home, it looked so much better.

Like most people, I am dying to play this now....its less than 2 weeks away.

Sony's Latest Marketing Strategy

What is Sony doing? I can remember the times when a new console was introduced, and there were two options: either you buy it or you don't. But thanks to Microsoft starting the ball rolling on different versions of the 360, we now have Sony following suit by offering five hundred different versions of the Playstation 3. Is the 60 GB too expensive for you? Why not go for the 40! Oh wait, they gimped the set and now it's not backward compatible (but they don't make that very clear on the box or via marketing). 40 GB not up your alley? There is still the 20. Coming soon, the 22 GB set. Then then 26 GB. Then the 400 GB for the people who want to download the entire run of Star Trek starting with Shatner and ending with the last crappy movie.

Really Sony, PICK A SET AND STICK WITH IT. The consumers are getting sick of all these changes every few months trying to get a few more people to buy the console and help get the company out of the red. Or better yet, stop focusing so much on tweaking the console and get some decent games out for the thing.

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core for the Wii

Anyone get this yet, its really great. Probally the best GG I have played in a while. Wii controls are interesting but I didn't try for too long. I been playing with the classic controller which is great. It plays so smooth I will be playing that way until I ger the Hori Stick next month!!!

It looks very sharp, great animation and has almost no load time. I would say none but now and than you have to wait a sec or two at the intro scenes. The game has kick-@$$ music also, lots of guitar rock.

Its a great fighter and will hold you over until SF4 comes out, get it now!
